Justice Programs

We build on Aboriginal-led practice to deliver a range of justice programs and initiatives to empower our people.

Community Legal Education

NAAJA will provide culturally appropriate legal education, training and capacity building to a range of groups and organisations in the Northern Territory. NAAJA supports Aboriginal people to learn more about the justice system and to build links between Elders and community leaders, the courts, police and other service providers. This makes the justice system more relevant for Aboriginal people and enhances the relevance and effectiveness of the justice system for Aboriginal people.

NAAJA will deliver culturally appropriate legal services through criminal law, civil law, community legal education and law and justice.

Kungas Program

The Kungas program delivers pre and post release through care services to female prisoners in custody at the Alice Springs Correctional Centre, in order to reduce recidivism rates,  support women to transition back into the community, and increase safety of women and children.

Throughcare

NAAJA’s Alice Springs and Palmerston based Indigenous Throughcare Program Case Managers aim to reduce recidivism and incarceration rates by supporting Aboriginal people preparing to leave prison and detention through the delivery of intensive, high quality case management service provision that continues post-release. Case management support is provided to help people in prison and detention develop strong and holistic post-release plans that address their goals, risks and transitional needs, as well as keep them linked in to therapeutic support post-release where necessary. We start working with people and their families up to six months before they leave prison and detention, and provide post-release support for as long as they wish to remain involved and there is an identified need.

Bilata

The Bilata Legal Pathways Program to increase the access and participation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to the studies and practice of law.
