DVD Release – “Call me a Lawyer”
The North Australian Aboriginal Justice Agency (NAAJA) has developed a DVD titled “Call me a Lawyer” in eight different languages used by Aboriginal people in the Top End of the NT. The DVD assists Aboriginal people who are confronted with challenging legal issues.
The DVD, developed with funding received from the Commonwealth Department of the Attorney General, is designed to clearly explain Aboriginal people’s rights in a language they understand, and features Aboriginal Interpreters working together with NAAJA Solicitors. The DVD has been made in English, Kriol, Tiwi, Warlpiri, Anindilyakwa, Djambarrpuyngu, Gupapuyngu and Murrinh-Patha.
NAAJA Chairperson, Mr. Norman George said “this DVD is an important source of information for all Aboriginal people who come in contact with the law. It is an educational resource designed to reduce communication gulfs between Aboriginal people and the Northern Territory Justice System and importantly, it fulfills the United Nations International Covenant on Civil and Political rights which states a person is entitled to “be informed promptly and in detail in a language which he understands of the nature and of the cause of the charge against him.”
Mr George said “it is hoped future funding can be secured to provide further resources in this area.”
Copies of “Call me Lawyer” can be obtained by contacting Danial Kelly, NAAJA’s Community Legal Education Solicitor on 89825100.
