How Law students and graduates can volunteer
Volunteering / Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice (GDLP)
NAAJA is keen to support law students and law graduates looking to become lawyers. Our funding restrictions mean we can only pay you in valuable experience and exciting adventures.
We are open to all expressions of interest from law students no matter what stage you are at. Student volunteers spend as little as a week and as much as three to four months with our criminal, civil and advocacy / community legal education teams.
The breadth of our work means students can obtain significant experience.
Our cases range from traffic matters in the Magistrates Court through to High Court appeals via Bush Courts held in a host of communities. In civil it can include child in need of care work, Mental Health Tribunal work, family law, Centrelink work, police and prison complaints amongst many other areas.
In advocacy and legal education we prepare submissions on proposed legislation, legal education to Aboriginal kids in remote communities and more.
This means NAAJA can offer meaningful experience to students in many areas. Some of our students are local, some interstate and some international. Our lawyers are in the main young and thus well aware of what can really assist students. NAAJA welcomes your inquiry!
NAAJA has now hosted many GDLP students. We are proud to say a lot of these GDLP students have been Aboriginal law graduates doing their practical hours with us to enable them to be admitted to practice as lawyers. If you are weighing up where you want to do the practical portion of your GDLP, speak to us and we can discuss whether we can enter a mutually beneficial relationship.
NAAJA welcomes your inquiry!
